Earlier this summer, director Michael Bay began sharing quick teases from the set of Transformers: The Last Knight that included the introduction of an all-new character named Sqweeks. The tiny, beat-up Vespa was not only a standout as a new character, but from the looks of it, Sqweeks was set to act as a practical effect (for the most part, at least) — a change of pace from the usual CGI-heavy franchise.
Now, after a few weeks of filming and a tweak to the spelling of the character’s name, fans have gotten more insight on the little robot. Today on his Twitter page, Bay shared a character card for Sqweeks — like he’s done recently with Transformers franchise newcomer Hot Rod and Drift — which hints that the little Vespa is going to be the franchise’s cute, marketable new companion.
Standing at 3 feet and 6 inches tall, Sqweeks is only “little” when you compare him to the standard size of the franchise’s heavy-hitters like Optimus Prime, or any member of the Autobots or Deceptecons, really. In fact, the more you look at him, Sqweeks seems a bit like the heart string-tugging mascot that Bumblebee once was, albeit this time the mascot has the compact frame of characters like Star Wars‘ R2-D2 and BB-8. With that in mind, don’t be surprised when Sqweeks hits every toy shelf imaginable: after all, it’s pretty clear he’s meant to hold the attention of the younger audience.

But really, look at this adorable transforming Vespa — is there any way to really be upset with its existence? What’s also intriguing is the idea of the ‘little guy’ walking as a practical effect. With one wheel and a kick stand as a peg leg, it’s going to be interesting to see how the character was brought to life when the eventual Blu-ray releases.
Bay has been sharing similar cards for other characters over the past few weeks, so it’s likely that this isn’t the last fans will see of the growing cast. He’s also been updating fans with live-action shots from the film, putting a heavy focus on showing off intense practical effects in Transformers 5 (Sqweeks included) as he brings fans along through production. A recent Facebook video showed off a behind-the-scenes look at an intense chase scene involving Bumblebee and a dangerously low-flying helicopter.
